The 102 story Empire State Building was awarded a LEED EB-OM Gold certification on September 16, 2011 becoming the tallest LEED certified structure in the U.S. The 58 story Comcast Center in Philadelphia had previously been the tallest.

The 2.4 million square feet National Geospatial Intelligence Agency headquarters in northern Virginia is a LEED New Construction Gold certified building.
7. When was the U.S. Green Building Council founded?
The U.S. Green Building Council was co-founded by Mike Italiano, David Gottfried and Rick Fedrizzi on April 6, 1993.
8. What was the first LEED Platinum building?
In December 2000, the Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis, Maryland, became the first LEED Platinum building, using the New Construction v1.0 rating system.
9. When was LEED first launched?
The first LEED Pilot Project Program, also referred to as LEED Version 1.0, was launched at the USGBC Membership Summit in August 1998. After extensive modifications, the LEED Green Building Rating System Version 2.0 was released in March 2000.

As recently as 2007, new construction was 80% of the floor area in LEED. Last year LEED EB certified more than ½ of all floor area in the LEED system. All of that from 2003, when the first two LEED EB projects were certified.
