There are 11,034 LEED certified commercial buildings as of December 2, 2011. There are an additional 32,474 registered commercial buildings pursuing certification.
2. How fast is USGBC certifying new green buildings?
USGBC is now certifying more than 1.5 Million square feet a day of LEED projects.
3. What was the 10,000th LEED for Homes project?
The Tacoma Housing Authority's 91 dwelling unit Salishan 7 in Washington was LEED for Homes Silver certified on April 5, 2011.
4. What is the tallest LEED certified building across the globe?
The 1,666 foot tall Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan was certified a LEED EB-OM Platinum.
5. What is the tallest LEED certified building in the United States?
The 102 story Empire State Building was awarded a LEED EB-OM Gold certification on September 16, 2011 becoming the tallest LEED certified structure in the U.S. The 58 story Comcast Center in Philadelphia had previously been the tallest.
6. What is the largest LEED certified new construction project?
The 2.4 million square feet National Geospatial Intelligence Agency headquarters in northern Virginia is a LEED New Construction Gold certified building.
7. When was the U.S. Green Building Council founded?
The U.S. Green Building Council was co-founded by Mike Italiano, David Gottfried and Rick Fedrizzi on April 6, 1993.
8. What was the first LEED Platinum building?
In December 2000, the Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis, Maryland, became the first LEED Platinum building, using the New Construction v1.0 rating system.
9. When was LEED first launched?
The first LEED Pilot Project Program, also referred to as LEED Version 1.0, was launched at the USGBC Membership Summit in August 1998. After extensive modifications, the LEED Green Building Rating System Version 2.0 was released in March 2000.
10. When was the first LEED Existing Building project certified?
As recently as 2007, new construction was 80% of the floor area in LEED. Last year LEED EB certified more than ½ of all floor area in the LEED system. All of that from 2003, when the first two LEED EB projects were certified.
11. How many LEED projects are there in Madagscar?
One. And as of August 30, 2011, Madagascar is one of 130 countries with a LEED project.
12. What is the total square feet of all LEED projects worldwide?
There are 1.669 Billion square feet of LEED certified buildings as of December 2, 2011 (note, square feet are not measured under LEED for Homes).
*LEED is an acronym for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system. The LEED third-party certification program is by far the most widely utilized in this country and arguably the now nationally accepted benchmark. As such, for the purposes of this quiz, LEED has been utilized.
